Almost as soon as thousands of impoverished, rural Lithuanians poured into Central Illinois at the turn of the twentieth century, the coal-mining jobs for which they came began to dry up. This is their story of survival in the face of the Central Illinois "Mine Wars" and the Great Depression--and an immigrant dream deferred. It is also the story of a second wave of Lithuanian refugees these first-wave immigrants sponsored after World War II. Based on primary source interviews and newspaper and public records research. Written by a former journalist, with historical context for two distinct waves of Lithuanian immigration to the U.S. and continuing ties with the homeland as Lithuania experienced two world wars, two successful independence movements, an interwar period of statehood, and 50 years of Soviet occupation. An all-in-one primer, written in journalistic style, for anyone with Lithuanian roots or anyone interested in twentieth-century European immigration to the U.S.

You can now see a recording of Sandy Baksys's Balzekas Museum Book Club 3/12/22 presentation on the Museum's Vimeo Chanel: https://vimeo.com/687830727

About the Author:

Springfield native Sandy Baksys has been a newspaper reporter, medical trade journalist, and for the last 20 years, a public relations consultant and writer. After spending five years in Germany, they emigrated to the United States. Dovydenas completed a BA in English literature at Brown University and went on to study photography at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. He began working as a freelance photographer in 1968 and through the 1970s he lived in Chicago, where he became involved in photographing the city's ethnic communities. During this period Dovydenas also traveled to other parts of the United States, photographing with a straightforward style and an emphasis on the act of seeing and showing rather than any sort of visual acrobatics. In 1975 Dovydenas released the Faces portfolio — held in MoCP's permanent collection — which gathers fifteen photographs of varied groups of people from five different states. The images portray politicians and softball players in Chicago, churchgoers in Minnesota, ranchers and transients in Nevada, and overnight campers in California, among other people. Without any claim to comprehensiveness, the portfolio suggests a range of lifestyles while emphasizing a common humanity.

Since the 1970s Dovydenas has expanded his scope internationally. The American - Lithuanian Trans-Atlantic Flight Association (ALTAFA) was founded and a Lockheed "Vega" type airplane was purchased. When the pilot originally selected to do the job resigned, the project was offered to Lt. Felix Waitkus. With the help of his father - in - law Anton F. Brotz, Sr., F. Waitkus rebuilt the "LITUANICA II) and made her fully suitable for the task. After desperately waiting for more favorable weather conditions, on Sept.21, 1935, F.Waitkus finally took-off from Floyd Bennett Field, N.Y. for a 4500-mile journey to Kaunas, Lithuania. A few hours later he flew into fog, rain, head-winds and icing conditions, forcing him to fly by instruments most of the time. After 22:15 hours of strenuous flying, being short on fuel and physically exhausted, Waitkus crash-landed in Ireland, near Ballinrobe. He was sixth pilot to cross the Atlantic solo and the only pilot to make such a crossing in 1935. Buvo įsteigta Amerikos Lietuvių Trans-Atlantinio Skridimo Sąjunga (ALTASS) ir nupirktas Lockheed "Vega" tipo lėktuvas. Kai pirmasis lakūnas (J. James- Janušauskas) rezignavo, į jo vietą buvo pakviestas ltn. Feliksas Vaitkus. Uošviui A.F. Brotz padedant, F. Vaitkus "LITUANICĄ II) perstatė ir pilnai paruošė transatlantiniam žygiui. Po desperatiškai ilgo geresnių oro sąlygų laukimo, 1935 m. rugsėjo 21d. F. Vaitku iš Floyd Bennett aerodromo New Yorke pakilo 4500 mylių skridimui į Lietuvą, Kauną. Šis albunas aprašo ir fotografijomis pavaizduoja Antojo Skridimo istoriją bei triumfališką F. Based on true events, the story begins with the armed resistance of Lithuanians against Soviet occupation in the 1940s, a struggle that will resonate with many people around the world today. After losing her parents in this "invisible war", the story's heroine is able to escape to Poland and then to New York City, where she and then her children grow up. And they grow up and look to find their way in the tumultuous 60s, 70s and 80s against the backdrop of social change, new opportunities for women, and the drug culture - and with the tragic legacy of their home country. Finally, as Lithuania begins to regain its independence in the late 1980s, the characters come to terms with life in their new country, the possibilities of returning to their old country, and their strong but challenging family relationships. The results of these studies were two remarkable works: the collection of tales "Rytų pasakos" (Tales from the East) and "Dangaus ir žemės sūnūs" (The Sons of Heaven and Earth).

However, Krėvė’s greatness depends not merely on his choice and variety of genres, themes or use of various literary methods, but his mastery of them all. Suddenly homeless and with little more than the clothes on their backs, they are relocated to the big city of Vilnius where they are domiciled with 40 other destitute families in a converted brothel under German occupation. Events that follow during the years of the war and after are witnessed through the eyes of their youngest child, Benzy, who courageously perseveres as he and his friends and relatives are forced to endure horrific conditions of poverty, prejudice, destruction and starvation while a deadly typhoid epidemic is raging on the streets and brutal mistreatment is meted out by German and later Polish authorities. Blessed with the support of a strong religious community and their own indomitable spirit, the family somehow sustains itself despite seeing fellow refugees succumb. They even manage to find and take some comfort in brief moments of laughter, love, and happiness as with determined willpower their primary goal remains to survive.

About the Author Raised in a rough barrio of East L.A. in the 1950s and 60s, where the only places of refuge were the school library and the safety of his home, teenage Paul Frank had two daily choices, to go outside and fight or stay inside and write. That’s how he developed a love for composing stories and poems. He earned an MA in English from UCLA and a doctorate in Education from USC. Listening to tales his father told about being a refugee boy on the Eastern Front of World War I, he promised to one day turn those harrowing adventures into a novel. In a 40 year career as an educator, he taught at the secondary school level in California and then at a Native American community college in New Mexico. Never forgetting his promise, he travelled to Lithuania in 1997 where he spent several weeks walking the streets of Vilnius and Druskininkai. After diligent and comprehensive research, he wrote this book covering 7 years in his dad’s life between 1915 and 1922. The author’s goal in writing about ethnic food is to have the reader experience the same thing. For the author the smell of ethnic dishes like Kapusta (cabbage) Soup or Kugela (potato pudding) isn’t the smell of cabbage or potatoes that is memorable but lunches at his grandmother’s house with his family, a welcome break from work at the family business next door. One problem in accomplishing this goal is that the extinction of ethnic foods in this country has been ongoing since WWII. Families with less time to prepare traditional meals fled to the supermarket to get the fix's for the their meals, some already prepared and needing only heating. The author sought to identify popular Lithuanian dishes and publish them in modern recipe form with standard cooking units. The author and several relatives and friends shared recipes and the memories of cherished family members and events of the past. The book traces the lives of two families from the arrival of the author’s grandparents from Lithuania in 1904 and membership in the Holy Trinity Catholic parish in Hartford, CT. through a depression, two World Wars, the Vietnam War and the 60’s all the way to present day. The book describes these historical events and the resulting changes in the family fortunes including the family food heritage. The result is the best of his family’s Lithuanian recipes and all the laughs and tears that went into them.

Author: Michael Sills

Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform

Format: Paperback, 137 pages

ISBN:9781977532558

Language: English

Butterscotch Amber Heart Pendant on a 36" Black Leather Cord Necklace

Amber is fossilized tree sap that dates back 40 millions years. His distinctive works convey an archetypal attitude that has deep-seated relations with his community; however; the power of his artistic language and the scope of his oeuvre put the name of the photographer into the ranks of the creators of the world's culture. The phenomenon of the artist's oeuvre could be defined by the individuality of his artistic expression, a steady program of his ethical ideas and his existential aesthetics. The aim of this book is to present his creative evolution as clearly and thoroughly as possible, to reconsider earlier interpretations and to get to know the author anew. Having entered the XXI century, Sutkus has not changed his opinion, on the contrary the exposures of his archives only reaffirmed his unusual artistic sensitivity. Snyder’s original contribution is to treat all of these episodes—the Ukrainian famine, the Holocaust, Stalins’ mass executions, the planned starvation of Soviet POWs, postwar ethnic cleansing—as different facets of the same phenomenon. Instead of studying Nazi atrocities or Soviet atrocities separately, as many others have done, he looks at them together. Yet Snyder does not exactly compare the two systems either. His intention, rather, is to show that the two systems committed the same kinds of crimes at the same times and in the same places, that they aided and abetted one another, and above all that their interaction with one another led to more mass killing than either might have carried out alone."
— Anne Applebaum, New York Review of Books

"How Stalins and Hitler enabled each other’s crimes and killed 14 million people between the Baltic and the Black Sea.
A lifetime’s work by a Yale University historian who deserves to be read and reread."
— The Economist, Books of the Year (2010)© 2010 by Timothy Snyder
Published by Basic Books, a Member of Perseus Books

ISBN-10: 0465002390
ISBN-13: 978-0465002399 |
Publication Date: October 12, 2010 | Edition: 1
Hardcover, Book Dimensions 9.5 x 6.4 x 1.7 inches

About the Author:

Laura Sintija Černiauskaitė was born in Vilnius, Lithuania in 1972, She studied Lithuanian language and literature at Vilnius University and became a journalist and an editor of a children's magazine. He is determined to put his skills in manufacturing engineering to work in helping to reverse the stagnant economy by introducing new technology and training people to use it.
