About the author:
Gabriele Labanauskaite boldly chooses themes that are relevant and important for contemporary society, and on the theatre stage she reveals situations that reflect the experiences of different groups in our society - her plays are open for today. Labanauskaite wrote her first drama The One that Hurt the Most, which analyses the problems of homophobia in society, in 2005.
She writes plays for Lithuanian and international theatres and interdisciplinary art projects. In 2016 Labanauskaite initiated Dramokratija (Dramacracy) - a festival of contemporary dramaturgy, which has become a launch pad for emerging playwrights. She has been exploring contemporary dramaturgy through numerous workshops as well as her doctoral studies, which culminated in the book Dramatika (Dramatics).* This is the first book written in Lithuanian that explores the processes of narrative construction in contemporary dramaturgy.
About the book:
Texts written for the creative community of artists do not lose their energy in the pages of the book. In a sense, they offer the reader a panacea to see reality more broadly and deeply, and they encourage us to take a fresh look at the text we are reading and at our pre-formed opinions about the value of drama, asking us to reassess our own opinions and reflect upon the many stereotypes around us. In Labanauskaite's words, we need to think about 'how to talk about society's problems, how to open up wounds and stimulate the desire to heal them?' This means understanding the reasons why these plays were written.
