Jonas Dovydenas was born in Kaunas in 1939. His family fled Lithuania in 1944 to escape the second Soviet occupation. The were refugees, then Displaced Persons in Germany until 1949, when they emigrated to the United States of America.
Jonas Dovydenas is a graduate of Brown University, where he studied writing and English literature. He studied photography at The Rode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island, and the Design Institute at Illinois Institute of Technology, in Chicago. He has been a free- lance photographer since 1968. His work has been exhibited at The Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), The Library of Congress (Washington, D.C), The Minneapolis Art Institute, The Douglas Kenyon and the Walter Kelly Galleries in Chicago. His work is also in numerous private and corporate collections. He has worked for magazines such as Time, National Geographic Adventure, Playboy, Soldier of Fortune, Chicago magazines and others. His work is published in two books: "Chicago Houses" by Janet Bailey, and a monograph "Nevada": A Journey". His first show in Lithuania was in 1982, in the galleries of the Union of Lithuanian Art Photographers. He was the first American In 1989 he showed his photographs taken in Soviet occupied Afghanistan. He lives in Massachusetts and Vilnius.
The present series of photographs was taken between 1996 and 2022.
