Book Description of "Diary 1944 - 1952"
Vytautas Osvaldas Virkau (1930–2017) was a Lithuanian graphic artist, painter, social worker, whose most of his life was spent in emigration. He left Lithuania with his family at the age of fourteen, lived in Austria, then Germany. In the cultural environment of Western Europe, the personality of the young man was formed, an interest in art, literature, theater, cinema became apparent. In 1949, he came to the United States with his family, studied painting at the Art Institute in Chicago, and studied humanities at the University of Chicago. Later, she taught art in colleges, organized art exhibitions, illustrated books, and created ex-libris.
Virkau's diary published in the book covers the period from 1944 to 1952, it consistently and in detail records the withdrawal from Lithuania, life in Germany, departure to the United States of America and several years of residence in this country. Diary entries testify to the most important experiences and experiences of life of a young person (teenager, later student) in a foreign environment. The wide interests of the young Vytautas Osvaldas
Virkau are impressed, reading this book, we also see the experiences of many of the Lithuanian who lived in a foreign environment at that time, feelings of loss of their homeland, loss, uncertainty and hopes of not being easily created in a foreign environment.
