About The Book
In the publication "Straw Gardens. Straw gardens focuses on the long-standing tradition of straw gardens, which was included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2023. Straw gardens – lightweight, structural, symmetrical and archetypal symbolic spatial constructions – symbolically continue the function of consecrating space and remain an important part of Lithuanian's ethnic self-awareness.
This book reviews not only the tradition of straw garden tying and its history, but also invites you to get acquainted with the unique stories, philosophy and unique nature of the work of four garden weavers – Zita Kumpelienė, Rasa Družienė, Loreta Lichtarovičienė and Jurgita Treinytė – from straw preparation to garden tying.
The publication presents examples of straw gardens and provides schemes for tying straw articles of binders – double-decker, roller, cubic gardens, straw stars and toys. The detailed diagrams of the articles are enriched by QR codes that link to educational videos. It is hoped that this publication will not only enrich the reader with theoretical knowledge, but also encourage him to join the group of garden binders.
The book is in Lithuanian, English.
