About the book:

Eighty- five Lithuanian photographers took part in the 26th annual Lithuanian photography exhibit, held at the Lithuanian Art Gallery Ciurlionis, 5620 S. Claremont Ave., Chicago, from October 24 to November 2, 1997. The show was sponsored by the Budrys Lithuanian Photo Library.

After the final call, the pictures submitted to this show were placed into the following categories: folk artists, potters, woodcarvers, weavers, spinners, millers, folk musicians, Easter egg decorators, bakers, glass blowers, beekeepers, hunters, roofers, farmers, haymakers, photographers, cooks, barbers, fishermen, carpenters, smiths, milkmen, poultry farmers, construction workers, wheelwrights, butchers, makers of traditional Palm Sunday decorations, and others. Attendees of the show were asked to vote for the pictures they thought best represented Lithuanian ethnographic crafts both thematically and esthetically. Prizes were awarded to the following photographers. In the senior section, Vaclovas Straukas from Klaipeda won first prize for his picture "The miller" (page 87);Algimantas Bardzius from Kaunas won second prize for his picture "The breadmaker" (page 84): Romualdas Pozerskis from Kaunas won third prize for his portrait of Mieliauskas (page 154). In the younger photographers' section (ages between 11 and 18) first prize was won by Irina Kuzminaite from Kaunas for her picture "A reed player at a fair" (page 76); second prize went to Kastytis Antanaitis from Kaunas for his photo of"Seamstress of clouds" (page 42); and third prize was awarded to Mindaugas Glaveckas from Kaunas for his shot of "The wagon driver" (page 167).
